NEVADA, TEXAS.

Nevada is on Farm Road 1138 two miles east of Lavon Lake in southeastern Collin County. The rich soils of the Blackland Prairies and the water provided by Bear Creek attracted settlers to the area as early as the mid-1840s. The first organized community in the area was McMinn Chapel, established in the early 1840s four miles north of the site of present Nevada. For the most part the residents of the community were the family and friends of its founder, John McMinn. In 1861 Granville Stinebaugh moved to Texas from Missouri and purchased 160 acres of land near McMinn Chapel. Shortly thereafter the town of Nevada was established on his farm and named by Stinebaugh in honor of Nevada Territory, which he had passed through on his way to search for gold in California. The town received a post office on August 3, 1880. Eight years later the tracks of the St. Louis Southwestern Railway reached the community. In 1889 Nevada incorporated, choosing an aldermanic form of government. From the 1880s to the 1920s Nevada served as a retail market for a small but populous farming territory. The population of the town grew from an estimated fifty in 1885 to 578 in 1920. By 1925 Nevada provided its 625 residents with paved roads, electricity, a telephone exchange, twenty-five businesses, and a high school. On May 9, 1927, a tornado struck the town. Twenty-seven people were killed, seventy-five were injured, and approximately $1 million in property damage occurred. Nevada never recovered from this disaster. The Great Depressionqv and the mechanization of farming further retarded the growth of the town. By 1950 the population had decreased to 386, and it remained near this figure for the next thirty years. In 1980 Nevada had an estimated 400 residents served by four businesses. In 1990 the population was 456.

Granville Stinebaugh and Mary Polly Russell lived in Buffalo, Dallas County, Missouri until he came to Texas in 1861. All of his children, except Braxton McCord, were born there. Granville caught "gold fever" and joined the "49 ers", who traveled overland to California in 1849, leaving behind his wife, Sarah and his first daughter, Nancy Mildred. Although, he and his compatriots had some luck in the mining fields, they lost everything to swindlers and he returned to Missouri penniless. His only memoir of the California experience was a conch shell, which he picked up for his wife. According to his granddaughter, in her monograph, "Our Heritage", Mary told Granville that she would rather have the conch shell than all the gold in California.

Granville and family, together with his brothers, John and James left Missouri for Texas in 1861, settling first in West Collin County near Pilot Point. In 1865, he and his brothers sold out and moved to East Collin County, just north of Dallas. His homestead became the site of the little town, Nevada, Texas. He was a veteran of the Civil War. He was a private in Company H, Quartermaster under the command of Major General J. B. McGruder.

After Hiram Cook, his youngest daughter's (Sarah Jane) husband died of pneumonia in 1883, Granville, his wife, and Sarah Jane and her two children moved to the trade center, Farmersville, where they remained for the remainder of their lives. (Source: Bob Stinebaugh)

Research Notes: Kathy Hall <nkhall@intrnet.net>

Jacob Stinebaugh left the Palatine area of Western Germany with 19 other young men to seek their fortune, and make their way to the colonies. They joined the Hessians, paid fighters for England and sailed to the colonies. There they joined the colonies in the War of Rebellion. Jacob has a war record. He lived in PA right after the war and married. They moved to Tenn. and then to Trigg Co. ? by 1800's. He had a land grant farm due to his war service.

Jacob ran a grist mill and a distillery with the Robert Rogers Family. Son Adam would marry Robert Roger's daughter. Their son Robert Rogers Stinebaugh, was Kathy Hall's great grandfather.

History of Benton County SEBASTIAN COUNTY. page 1369 Adam Stinebaugh, farmer, of Prairie Township, was born in Lincoln County, Mo., in 1821, his parents being Jacob and Nancy (Cannon) Stinebaugh, who were born in Pennsylvania and Kentucky, respectively. They were married in the latter State, and in 1819 removed to Lincoln County, Mo., living there until 1850, from which time they made their home in Dallas County until the war. They then returned to Lincoln County, and after peace was declared removed to Texas. There the father died, about 1882, aged eighty-seven. The mother died some years previous. Both were members of the Baptist Church. Mr. Stinebaugh was a skillful mechanic. The grandfather, Jacob, was born in Germany, and with nineteen others joined the English army during the Revolution, with the intention of coming to America, and as soon as possible deserting the English army to join forces with the colonists, in which project they were successful. Mr. Stinebaugh settled in Pennsylvania when the father of our subject was a boy; he next went to West Tennessee, and later settled in Kentucky, where he died. [hotpepper.ged]

Jacob Stinebaugh, the Younger, was born in Pennsylvania on November 8, 1796. He married Nancy Cannon in Christian County, Kentucky on November 14, 1816. Their Marriage license is on record in book 1A, page 158 in County records at Hopkinsville, Christian County, Kentucky. Jacob, Nancy Cannon, her parents, the James Cannons, and possibly Jacob's brother, John moved to Lincoln County, Missouri in 1817.
He was a man of means, and a financial factor in his community. He owned and operated a grist mill, driven alternately by water and horse power, a smithy, and a turner's shop besides a large and prosperous farm. His place was one of the busy commercial centers of the neighborhood. He manufactured all the spinning wheels and looms, and much of the furniture used in that section of Missouri. In some families his chairs, tables and quaint old-fashioned dressers are still treasured as family relics.
He purchased his land from Henry Chouteau to whom it had been granted by United States Patent and a French Grant. When he left Lincoln County, Missouri, he sold the farm to Cyrus Thompson, who later deeded the land to Rachel Trail and relatives in 1860. (Book P, Page 525, Deed Records of Lincoln County Missouri].

About 1850 the Jacob Stinebaughs moved to Dallas County in central Missouri, but were scattered by the Civil War. Their homes were burned and the country devastated by historic Order No. 11. They and two of their children, Susan and John, returned to Lincoln County about 1860 and in 1866 or 1867 followed Granville to Nevada, Collin County, Texas. Jacob and Nancy are buried in the Mount Pleasant Cemetery (also known as the Abston Belew Cemetery) in Lavon, Collin County, Texas. (Submitted by Melva Cook) About 1880 Jacob and his sons moved from Nevada, Texas to Farmersville, Texas.
