I have traced my family Washburn back to my g-g-grandfather Jacob Washburn who was admitted to the IN State Hospital (Central) in 1855 with chorea, which we know today as Huntington's Disease. Three of his sons and a couple of daughter's inherited the disease. I have hospital records for all three sons from two other state hospitals. My g-grandfather was one of them. My g- grandfather had 7 children of which 4 of them inherited HD. Of these 4, I know of one branch of the family who still has the disease today. My grandmother did not inherit the disease, so my branch of the family are free of it, but since I trace my family history laterally, I have seen quite a few families affected by this disease.

Medical records of a grandson say that his Huntington's Disease was inherited in the Washburn family by his grandmother. His grandmother was:
    -Polly Anna WEIR(s), b. about 1780, d. 25 Mar 1840, Otsego Co. NY; m. Miles WASHBURN about 1800 in Saratoga, NY; he was b. 1771, d. 20 Aug 1836, Otsego Co. NY.

Known children of Miles and Polly Anna who inherited the disease were:
    -Miles WASHBURN, b. 07 May 1807, Otsego Co. NY, d. in Oswego Co., NY. Further information on this persons descendants is available.
    -Jacob WASHBURN, b. 01 Mar 1816, Otsego Co. NY, d. about 1857 in IN, last residence in Winfield Twp., Lake Co. IN; m. Mary Ellen Curtis about 1840 in Ostego Co., NY; she was b. 1824 in NY, d. about 1905, last residence in 1900 was Montgomery Co., IA. We believe other daughters of Miles and Polly Anna also inherited the disease.

Known children of Jacob and Mary Ellen who inherited the disease were:
    -Jacob (Jr.) WASHBURN, b. 1849 in OH or IN; d. 02 Jan 1903 in Buchanon Co. IA; we think m. Catharine STEMPLER in Polk Co., IA.
    -Isaac WASHBURN, b. about 1850 in IN, d. 02 Jun 1884, Buchanon Co., IA. Never married.
    -Lewis John WASHBURN, b. about 1856, in IN, d. 29 Jul 1897, Yankton Co., SD; m. Jemina DAWSON, 26 May 1878 in Story Co. IA; she was b. in Centerville IA 1861, d. 09 Oct 1926, Sanborn Co., SD. There may have been other children who inherited the disease.

Known children of Lewis and Jemima who inherited the disease were:
    -Grace E. WASHBURN, b. 1881/2 Hamilton Co., IA; d. 1926, was buried in Davison Co., SD; m. Jarius ROWLEY, 26 May 1905; he was b. 13 Jul 1879, d. 30 Dec 1949, buried in Davison Co., SD.
    -Edith WASHBURN, b/ 06 Aug 1883 Hamilton Co., IA; d. 29 Mar 1914 in Sanborn Co., SD; m. Wally STIER in 1903.
    -Estelle WASHBURN, b. 11 Feb 1888 in Hamilton Co., IA; d. 12 May 1933 in Sanborn or Yankton Co., SD; m. Frank BARUTH Dec 1906; he was b. 16 Nov 1878 in NE, d. 25 Dec 1933 in Thayer Co. NE.
    -Jesse WASHBURN, b. 29 Jan 1890 in Lincoln Co. SD; d. 05 Jul 1922 in Sanborn Co., SD. Never married. We know that Grace, Edith and Estelle had families and have more information.
